so i guess the light is not very far now! ;-)

your etc/host file is not correct,(or the host.conf defining the  
order of resolution) i assume.

one hint: try to put a FQDN hostname in your host file: i.e with a  
host, domain and toplevel (you can add a alias if u want)
and test with a ping to your hostname to be sure all is ok!
