SearchEngine&Lucene

Hi!
I am sorry I have missed myself in the code, so please could you explain me how the JahiaSearchBaseService searches for fields? Is it uses Lucene for indexing items from database? If yes, how the fields are obtained from database and added to Lucene? Which tables are involved?
Generally could I re-use the JahiaSearchBaseService functionality to search for the fields, ex. field "description", "name", etc.
