Extending Lucene Search

We need to expand the built in Jahia search functionality.  What we need to
do is search fields in custom tables and have matches show in the search
results. These tables may or may not exist in the jahia schema/database. Is
Lucene only used for searching documents or is it used for database field
searching. If Lucene is used how is it integrated into Jahia?
