[magnolia-dev] Site module prototype templates fail to render

I=27ve been given an existing project to add some new features to but I=27m=
 stuck getting the existing project to run smoothly to begin with and I was=
 hoping someone has seen this issue before and can give me some pointers=2E=
=2E=2E

After troubleshooting I narrowed the cause of the issues down to the use of=
 template prototypes that=2C for some reason=2C don=27t work but instead I=
 get an exception when loading any page using these templates=3A

When checking the JCR all pages have their renderType set to =27site=27 and=
 they have no templateScript set=2E
I then checked for the prototype node in the JCR as per the user guide =28h=
ttps=3A//documentation=2Emagnolia-cms=2Ecom/display/DOCS/Template+prototype=
=29 and found it here=3A

=5Bcode=5D/modules/custom-templating-module/config/=3Cproject name=3E/templ=
ates/prototype
=5B/code=5D

This has one templateScript parameter which is set to /custom-templating-mo=
dule/templates/pages/main=2Eftl =28and for the rest it=27s got definitions=
 for the different areas=29

I checked all paths and this template does exist and looks ok to me=2E

Eventually=2C as a test=2C I ended up changing the category page template a=
nd set it=27s renderType to freemarker with templateScript to the same main=
=2Eftl file and that works fine up to the first =40cms=2Earea include as th=
at too fails=2C but at least i know rendering via freemarker alone does wor=
k=2E

Does anybody have any ideas why the site module wouldn=27t work or how to t=
roubleshoot this further=3F
