quick outlook question

I know the zidestore plugin needs to be used to access IMAP functions like the calendars etc, but can outlook be used to check pop3 mail and send smtp without the plugin?

my boss only wants 10 people to use the shared features, the other 60 people need pop3/smtp support and thats it.
