without exception, the novell execs i met were NOT out to do business as 
usual.

At that time, they felt that the company was truly struggling with their 
new business model... of
course, their existing culture was antithetical to the idea of the 
community being involved. these execs ALL
saw that success lie in  getting developers onboard.in a meaningful way.

it was, rightly, a real pickle.  i spoke at length regarding my ( and 
others) experiences (good and bad)
 in the linux trenches and always closed with the idea that although 
we're commited to open source,
we need to pay our bills. trust is very hard to get from the community 
and we want real, fully functional
projects with which to be involved.

thanks chris.. since august 2004, they appear to have made real progress 
n a good direction.
