This is surely your best bet... No, please reread my post. If you need German/French upper-127 characters Latin-1/9 is the best bet from a real world compatibility standpoint. Which includes such excellent clients as Outlook Express or Bat!, sigh. If you only have ASCII, yes, then generate ASCII - tagging it as UTF-8 just doesn't make any sense (since it is a strict subset). If you have anything which isn't in Latin-1, generate UTF-8. Greets, Helge PS: Latin-1 is a 1:1 subset of Unicode, so its trivial for any Unicode client to deal with it. This is why it is perfectly reasonable (in constrast to other 8-bit charsets).
