Since I'm a user/poster to the docs plone I figured I'd chime in.
(a) I haven't used the linkage features because I'm lazy.  I bothered to
organize my notes and what-not,  I really don't want to dig through
other peoples postings to see what relates to mine.  There is a search
feature,  someone with two neurons to rub together can find the content
if they bother to look.  This is just me, but I'd wager most of the
people who post in docs feel more-or-less the same way.
(b) I doubt all claims like "done almost automatically in a Wiki".  Nah!
I've used lots of Wikis that are/were a mess.  It only works if (b1) I
agree with your organization, (b2) you have created categories that
relate to what I want to post, and (b3) I understand the mind-model
behind the structure you created.

I'm not pro/anti-wiki/zope and I'm not terribly interested in UI
theme/design - I'm just tossing in my two bits from a user perspective
(and I think one with a fair amount of experience in this area).

If we are talking about www, then yes, a rigid tree is a good idea.  For
the docs sight I think "Good Luck!".
