I can imagine that the Logic would just tell the indexer to index a set of documents when they arrive and use it for queries, eg using XML-RPC. That way it would be replaceable which would be nice. BTW: I was also wondering whether something similiar exists for IMAP4. Some kind of external daemon which indexes the contents of the folders now and then, and makes the index available via XML-RPC or some other protocol to allow for fast message searches.
