Thanks for that suggestion.  I didn't try it, but it is a good idea.  Will 
report back on that.

No.  In fact, I've even come across firewalls that will strip out 
Accept-Encoding: gzip, so I was checking that header was still being 
received by the server.

That's exactly what it does.  That does make a big difference.
