Did you build from source or use some packages?  I don't know if the
MAJOR_VERSION/MINOR_VERSION/SUBMINOR_VERSION gets encoded into the
binaries somehow.

Yes.  

Only caveat I'm aware of regarding upgrading is if you move from
PostgreSQL pre-8.3 to 8.3-or-later, then you need
