ANNOUNCE: 5.4 Branched, 5.5 Started

For those building from source, or otherwise hacking OGo, who are not on
the developer mailing list

Trunk is now the v5.5 development branch.  "Stable" development towards
a v5.4 release is taking place in the "5.4pre" branch.  So update your
local repositories with caution!

Why the version number jump?

The internal version numbers in OpenGroupware have been
5.2/5.3/5.4/etc... all along.  But the initial stable release was tagged
as v1.0 with an intention towards clarity for users.  However version
numbers are not nearly so sacrosanct anymore [nobody has versions that
'make sense' anymore] so the decision was made to just use the version
number as.... the version number!

Why branching now?

Had to happen sooner or later. :)  Also with v5.5 there will be database
schema changes so code will not be a drop-in-replacement like v1.0/v.1.1
has been for a very long time.  One change, the addition of a companyId
attribute to the Note entity has already occurred.

How can I help?

Test out the code [but not on your production servers just yet]!  Submit
bug reports, patches, etc...  Join up to the developers mailing list
<http://mail.opengroupware.org/mailman/listinfo/developer> and pitch in.
Or if you are not a coder but have some ideas or want to contribute some
other way join our discuss@ list

all things generally OGo related.  An easy way for non-hackers to help
is to point out flaws/errors of the OpenGroupware Administrator's Guide

BTW, anyone building from source is advised to at least lurk on
developers@ or you may occasionally run into things that mysteriously
break.  Those things will probably be much less mysterious if your on
developers@.  

While we are on the topic of mailists and communication there is also a
list specifically for XML-RPC development using either the legacy
XML-RPC API provided by the ogo-xmlrpcd daemon or using the API provided
by the zOGI ZideStore bundle <http://code.google.com/p/zogi/> @

the lists there is an *unofficial* IRC channel @
irc://irc.freenode.net/ogo - you'll occasionally catch OGo hackers and
