Ah so that's what I missed.
I tried appointment.setParticipants and it works perfect. 
Thanks for the info!

What I miss in the XML-RPC docs is what fields are required so the
request can be processed, like adding the whole person object to the
setParticipants seems to be overkill to me :) (overkill as in overhead,
dup data etc.)
