only if you have a weak mail client or if noone has shown you how to use it.

i could rephrase your comment as:
my personal preference is mailinglists because my mail client has
better search and threading than forums, also better editing as well as
working offline too.

the truth however is somewhere else.

there is no better way. there is only messages and the users preference
in how those messages are read. 

as a result of that the best solution is one that provides access to
these messages through a webforum, a mailinglist, and a newsgroup, and
any other messaging format you can think of.

only with such a solution you can be sure that you are not just reaching
the majority but everyone and noone is left out.
