For multi-site configuration, try Drupal www.drupal.org ( of 
www.spreadfirefox.com , www.linuxjournal.com, and www.deanspace.org fame 
).  You won't have to wait for 'the next version'!

Also has excellent taxonomy system, is well coded, flexible, powerful, 
and easy to fly :)  (not quite as pretty as Mambo on the surface, but 
much prettier under the hood.)

BTW.  It's not just a blog/community system!  I don't think there was 
anything mentioned in the initial question that it wouldn't handle.
