I have been active in three generations of XML user
groups in Austin, Texas.  The first was actually an
SGML user group that began in 1991.  Recently, the
dedicated core of the group (about 20-25) discussed
formalizing our group to some productive end.

I believe that with conjoined resources (Univ of
Texas, Austin Community College, BMC, IBM/Tivoli,
Vignette, Dell, dot.com debris, etc) in Austin, we can
produce a lively conversation around the future of
information/communications/content.  Austin is a great
place for small conferences since everything in town
is within a 20 minute circle (from downtown).  We have
legendary music, local technology mavens and curious
minds to meet global interests.

With your permission, I will open discussions with the
inside circle and see if there is interest.  We
recently attempted to do a hackathon on behalf of
rural healthcare providers, who deal with increasing
complexity and regulatory constraints.  The frameworks
were discussed but no code yet. If we could even
vaguely include a track for Open Source for
Healthcare, I can almost guarantee public, private and
individual support.

I have lived in Austin almost 20 years and learned
SGML coding philosophy on natural language analysis of
clinical dictation narratives.  I have monitored the
progress of XML in healthcare since the first SGML SIG
in 1996, but I am not currently associated with any
corporate vendor.  The standards are ripe and open
source is maturing, the only thing missing is focused
intent.  

This could be fun.
