I just found out this project called dspace (www.dspace.org, see article 
at http://www.dlib.org/dlib/january03/smith/01smith.html)

It is run out of MIT and was started with $1.8 MM grant from HP.

DSpace is BSD-style licensed although it seems to have a "file handle" 
component (not required) which has a more restrictive license.

If look into it, I would love to compare notes.
