any solution that lives outside the browser will have this problem
unless some form of remote control of that external app is possible.

yes.

in general, one thing we have learned from sTeam development is, that
while it is easy to install a server and maybe even get people to use
it, it is much harder to get people to use different client software.

people like sticking to what they are used to. as a result we need to
support as many different clients as possible (this is what has led to
sTeam supporting many different protocols)

in other words, there is not one single solution that works for everybody.

personally, i'd like to see something properly integrated in firefox.
that would simply mean the ability to select multiple files or allow
drag+drop in the uploader that the browser already has.
