Newbie session problem

Hi, I'm a bit new to PHP and sessions, and I can't figure out how to access the session variables (like username) in PHPSlash.  I can get the session id and I've looked through the session file in /tmp , so I know that a session exists, but I just can't access the variables.  Can someone please tell me how to extract this info?  Thanks
