Issues with the templates system...

Heya,

I've been playing with the templates to customise the site. There seems to be very little information on the how the templates work apart from the FAQ. The problem I'm experiencing is that when I use a { } value - the parser substitutes it with a blank value. For example {IMAGE_URL} is used in one of the basic templates where it works but if I reuse that in say the topicBar.tpl then I get nothing.

Any ideas anyone.
