Group settings for restricted sections

Hi,

I'm tyring to figure out how the groups module works.  How can I make a
section of the site only available to members of a certain group?  

I tried to make a "Staff" section, then created a "staff" group and
clicked the Staff section on that group's edit page.  Then I modified
the "nobody" group to exclude the Staff section.  But this didn't seem
to work.

I'm a little bit confused about the differences and interworkings of
permissions and groups.  slashPerm::have_perm() seems to make no use of
groups.  

Enlighten me!
