I think the reason why that was done was for early InnoDB limitations, like index size or something like that. But If I recall correctly, it was just early eversions that it was an issue with and assume now that our minimum MySQL/MariaDB version is probably sufficient that it is no longer required… but I would certainly look into the specifics before anything is done about it.
