Well firstly, there is this MR which hopefully addresses the less than ideal (but "got the job done") implementation of Smarty 5 in Tiki last year...

I will test it eventually, honest, but just haven't got to it yet. Hopefully others will too...

Once the Tiki integration is simplified, adding custom functions etc should once again become simpler as it was with the previous version.

But as for additions to it for Smarty 6, i guess performance improvements and compatibility with new versions of php will be good, but i expect that's what they're doing already... (yes, i see now, followed the link https://github.com/smarty-php/smarty/discussions/1200 thanks Marc)
