Well, the Cocoon snapshot  cocoon-2.1-build-2003.03.11.23.15.tar.gz is 
just a mninimal (naked) version you could say. In the meantime the 
Cocoon community has put in back the samples and other stuff. So you 
could build your own Cocoon webapp and reference to this instead to the 
minimal one we provide (the reference can be set within build.properties).

I just placed a very recent Cocoon snaphot on the website 
(2003.04.03.18.47):

and it seems to be fine, except that the Lenya-Forrest publication
doesn't compile. Well, you can delete it from the pubs directory and
you also have to place a comment around the Forrest part within your 
build.xml, then the BUILD will be successfull

The new build actually looks good, but I have not fully tested it.
The unit tests are still work in progress
