The first three parts of a version number will result in an upgrade, but
anything there-after is automatically recorded, but will not force an
upgrade. It is best to keep to numbers throughout, but after the first three
numbers, it is up to the author. I'm not actually sure an RFC was ever
written that specified any of this (including the three-part format of
module versions).

So, the module upgrade process will *only* look at the first three parts
when comparing version numbers of a module.It will try to handle
non-standard version numbers sensibly, so 0.1.2 == 00.01.02 == .1.2. ==
0.1.2.3.4.5.6 wrt upgrades.
