This is a nasty one. In general the use of the timestamp throughout the system
is best, but will exclude these early dates.
Saving dates in a formatted way will make compatibility with all different
databases hard, as they all have different ways to store datetime. 

In general, the best overall solution would be to have core provide a
'datetime' function, and have that function probably store in timestamp with a
negative value as the possibility, or store as text (will provide for a lot of
calculation errors).
