We use INN2 as our newsserver, which works great and scales incredibly,
using little resources (its what powers usenet itself). However it has a
downside - its a total git to admin and there is almost zero documentation
around (thats free too anyway).

We are about to switch over to a cyrus powered system because then people
will actually be able to monitor our news groups via IMAP if they wanted
(and had committer access ;-). It also means we would have to run fewer
servers since cyrus is running atm anyway, the much simplified access
control will be a boon too. Rabbitt is the guru where cyrus is concerned.

The chance of you running a news server on a hosting account is pretty
small, unless you have the entire dedicated box anyway.
