I would imagine that the space would be treated as a character, while no space as a NULL, but I have never given it a test to be honest. The use of the alt though is to give a reference to what the image is for browsers that do not display the image (either text browser, images turned off, missing image). I have always just used the no space variety for images that I do not want a refernce for because of design choices.
