In the past i have used hylafax in combo with a ZyXel model. I still use 
hylafax to receive and send faxes in PDF format. The voice mail has 
since long gone. Worked perfect.

If you need to go advanced, have a look at bayonne, but i guess that 
will be over the top.

Last year i spent a saturday afternoon getting stuff on an openbrick 
(openbrick.org), but gave me a headache after staring at a kernel driver 
for 4 hours, never picked it up after that.
