I am trying to get us on a standardized icon set.  However, there are 
licensing hurdles that make adopting icons directly from Tango 
difficult.  It's easier and faster for us to create new icons which 
conform to their style guide than to create our own guidelines.  As I 
was told in Tango's IRC channel, all of the GPL'd projects which have 
adopted Tango-like icons don't ship icons directly from Tango with their 
releases.  They either ship them separately, or create new icons.

Tango is intended mainly for desktops, but there's no reason why their 
look and feel can't be applied to the web, which is what we'd be doing. 
  Approaching Tango to supply them with additional material is certainly 
an option.
