The interesting wording for me is "the intention is to direct traffic
towards the website". Direct traffic?

In the past cases here of this recurring topic of newsgroups vs forums,
the decision was to recognize the division in preferences (generally
split by 'type' of xaraya user), and cater for them. It did support the
demonstrated preference at the time, which was to hold discussions on
development decisions and related discussion here in the newsgroups.
This was obviously important for many development related reasons in the
project.

I think there needs to also recognize that 'support questions' and
'development discussion' may be two very different things.

Although I recognize the need for 'increasing website traffic', I hope
it is not the only criteria to base the use of forums over the
newsgroups.  One objective that i believe is important for the xaraya
project is to make it more convenient to contribute to development
discussion, and increase the number of quality code commits. Those are
not necessarily positively correlated with increased website traffic,
whereas use of xaraya itself might be ...

That might even serve in my mind as a criteria for the PMC for some
decisions for the benefit of the project?

You're not the only one. I visit the forums when I can and try and post
if i can help there, but my preference by far for discussion is for the
mailing lists/newsgroups - with all the many conveniences that they
provide (at least for me) over forums, not in the least, time saving as
one of them.
