Well, all sites I manage run from a checked out repository. Quick  
fixes get editted directly into the live environment, committed there  
and pulled into and merged into the development site. For larger  
installs the development area is pulled into the (multiple) live  
area(s) (or pushed into it, depending on what side i'm on).

Is that what you mean?
