Base/Menu access to categories

Trying to set up a menu that can access my categories....just like in
the demo web site.   On the demo web site I notice that the "menu
content" url uses a (#) syntax.   I also notice a {#} syntax as well.  I
can't figure out how these numbers work.   The manual only mentions
[module] syntax.
