Your basic theme tutorial sounds right on the money. Such basic steps can be
fairly onerous to understand when written by experts/developers, who take
much for granted about what is comprehensible to beginners. They will often
provide far too much detail about details, and far too little step-by-step
instruction about fundamentals.

A PDF of the tutorial has been posted to the documentation list (a link to
it, at least). I'm very impressed with the work that has gone into it. I'm
sure you will find it very useful.
