Getting article aid (giving or not giving pubid) via the title

Is it possible to get an article (or a list of articles) via its title ?
Is there an API call in the module, in order to do this or something similar?
My need is for interfacing data from a different system (via HTTP SQLXML
calls) with articles.
Linking with a DD field can be good either, but how to do the link, without
knowing article aid?
Someone knows anything about?
