XHTML 1.1 got rid of the target attribute. If that's the direction things
are headed it'd be good to follow suit. Besides, the back button in the
browser is the second most used navigation tool for the web (hyperlinks come
in first); opening new windows for things can confuse some people if they
weren't aware that a new window was going to open and suddenly their back
button (common way out) isn't helping.

Just because it's become the standard way of doing things in some circles
doesn't mean people are happy about it.
