I did a comparison as you suggested searching for longtext and blob  
types but the tables from the working and non-working databases match  
fine up so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

I've stripped all modules other than articles, search and categories  
(and the core modules) from the non-working database site but the  
problem still occurs.

I also tested another module, the sitecontact module, to see whether  
the vanishing dollar sign problem occurred and it did, so its not  
specific to the articles module. It seems to effect all textareas and  
it even happens in other input boxes.

Is there any thing else I can check to do with the database? The  
MySQL version I'm using is 5.0.18 with a UTF-8 character set. PHP  
versions I've tested are 4.4.2 as mod_php on apache and versions  
5.1.2 and 5.1.5 both as fastcgi on apache. All have the same  
problematic result.
