It works for me, but it depends what your comfort level is. I use 2x in 
   a couple cases where I need things like special dproperties or 
modules only 2x has.
The downside is that the directory and db changes are not all done yet.

I use xarpages, articles and categories in a 2x setting.

I would argue that the most violent changes are behind us, but that may 
be wishful thinking :) There clearly will still be some changes to both 
the database and the directory structure. The latter should not be a 
problem if you are updating with monotone, but can call for minor 
updates to non-core module code.

The problem here is that as yet there are no official maintainers for 
most 2x modules. I'm making some modules available as downloads for 
anyone interested but it's not really my intention to maintain them all.

Concerning categories you should be aware that in the 2x version the 
visualapi (categories dropdowns and  stuff) have been replaced by 
dproperties, so interaction with other modules may have changed. I don't 
claim to have tested categories completely in 2x (I don't use the 
navigation stuff for instance).

In the meantime I've uploaded updated 2x versions of xarpages, 
categories and articles. Let me know if you run into problems.
