Special objects & text in select items

Hello,

Is there a way to have a different text, i.e. label, in a select/ 
dropdown box used in a special object (i.e. like thisismyvalue1 |  
Standardformat)?
I'd like have more descriptive texts in the select boxes but don't  
want to change all values used in the DTML. Besides those wouldn't be  
very short and easy to use.
