See part of above link -- seems AIX is the main holdout, plus /dev/fd/ 
on FreeBSD and derivatives [Darwin is FreeBSD-derived, right?].

Seems like the right path, given the '/proc/[pid]/fd/' and '/dev/fd/' 
caveats mentioned at the link.
