FYI: gcc-g95 has been merged into GCC

Dear all,

Through this mail I would like to inform everyone that gcc-g95[1] has
been merged[2] into a development branch[3] of GCC, the GNU Compiler
Collection[4].  The new compiler front end will be called gfortran.
This means that an (experimental) Fortran 95 front end will be part of
GCC 3.5, expected to be ready for release in q3 2004.

The goal of the gcc-g95 project is to extend GCC with a fully standard
complying Fortran 95 compiler front end with support for the GNU Fortran
dialect[5] for backward compatibility.

Integration with GCC is a crucial step for the project, because it means
that the project developers now have the full support of the GCC
developers community.  This will allow the gcc-95 project team members
to focus on finishing and debugging gfortran and the libgfortran runtime
library, while working with the community to straighten out any GCC
integration issues.
It also means that it will be much easier for everyone to obtain the
sources of the new front end, and to build your own copy of GCC with
support for Fortran 95.  Instructions for building gfortran will be made
available on the gcc-g95 project page[1] once the compiler has been
bootstrapped and tested succesfully on a number of targets.

Gfortran is still under heavy development, but it should be quite usable
for most not too complicated Fortran code.  We invite everyone to give
gfortran a try on their favorite Fortran sources and give us feedback,
helping us debuggin and finishing the new front end.

Gfortran is a compiler front end developed as part of the g95 and
gcc-g95 projects.  The gcc-g95 project is a fork of the original g95
project[6] that was started by Andy Vaught in March 2000[7].
