Quite a few things use the IfR as an alternative to having to write an
IDL compiler. If you start from nothing, it's easier to use the IfR as
a poor-man's IDL parse tree than it is to write an IDL compiler from
scratch. Once you've got an IDL compiler, the prospect is much less
attractive.
