Oliver, The distance displayed during the contest seems to be the maximum radial distance the robot has attained from its start point and not the total distance the robot has traveled. This means the maximum possible distance is 1.8 meters if the robot does not fall off the tatami. View the first round of the gollum_vs_LesLascars match from January 16, gollum walks across the tatami from its start point and attains a distance reading of 1.32 meters, it then turns around and walks back across the tatami (+1.5 meters) over it's start point and the distance display remains at 1.32 meters. It seems like the total distance traveled by gollum should be over 3 meters, yet the displayed distance does not indicate this. After finding this problem, I have watched many past matches closely and it occurs on all of them. It is just easier to see on matches without jumping robots. Note: the only time the displayed distance value goes above 2 meters is if the robot has fallen off the tatami (on a side opposite from its start). Mike Jost (FreeTime) Yahoo!
