For sure the current system isn't ideal and I believe there is no ideal
system. It is always a compromise between efficiency, simplicity and
round duration. Since the rounds are played every weekday, a bad robot
would slowly get down whereas your good robot will climp up more
rapidly. Of course, you may temporarily be blocked by a robot which is
better than yours and hence the ranking doesn't exactly reflect exaclty
the absolute performance ranking. An option would be to freeze the
upload of controllers for the finals and run several rounds (ideally as
much as there are competitors in the contest) to get a better ranking.
However, currently only the first robot receive a prize and the current
system garantees that if your robot is at any position in the hall of
the fame, it will climb up to the top in one round if it's able to
defeat any other robot.
This is why I believe the current system is fair. I think you have to
take into consideration that the contest is spread over time and robots
entering the contest earlier receive a very little more chance to
achieve a better ranking (since they are less likely to be temporarily
blocked by another robot).
