hi! a beginner needs hel!

Hi! i'm kinda lost in what u all say since i know nothing .... I 
know u can help me coz u seem like pros to me ^___^
I'm new to the whole robotic field and I need ur help! We are a 
group of computer science students and we want to design a virtual 
intelligent robot the type that avoid obstacles, never pass the same 
area unless it finished passing the whole building, and returns when 
the battery is low. I need to know:
1.	What is the software needed for this kind of projects?
2.	Where can I find it (is it available on the internet free or 
do I have to buy it)?
3.	What are the recommended programming languages for this kind 
of projects?
