Finals results!

Hi,

The finals took place last Saturday in Yverdon-les-bains closing this
second edition of the Roboka contest.
As you could see in live and can see now on the hall of fame, the winner
is BobII (Anders and Johan from Sweden).
ChuckNorris could climb up to rank #3 instead of KaI, otherwise, the
hall of fame remained unchanged.
The new tactic of BobII surprised many of us (including me). This
marathon-man technique also puzzled Toddler who could not react
appropriately. That was a bit frustrating to watch this last match of
the finals, but also interesting to see that such a tactic was
apparently not implemented by any contestant prior to the finals.
Although it is not agressive, it is clearly a winning strategy in the
short term. Indeed, I believe that Toddler (or any other robot) could
have been easily improved to prevent his opponent from using this
tactic, but he had to know it before...

Anders and Johan surprised us also last year when they discovered that
walking on the knees was a very efficient winning stragegy (and they
actually won last year also).

Congratulations again to Anders and Johan!

And thanks for coming to Yverdon-les-bains! That was nice to meet you in
person and that you could present BobII to the people attending the
finals (about ~100 people were there).

I would like to thank all the participants of the contest. Although I
had very little time to organize this contest, it was a great pleasure
for me to see this tribe of robots evolving until what we have reached
today. I believe the level of programming of the robot is pretty high
and of scientific interest.

Maybe we would need more technical information / reference on the
different techniques used throughout this contest than the simple
description.txt file which is often too short. Maybe the documentation
should be a (minor) criterion for victory...

Also, I appreciated Toddler's authors (Joel and Tim) who just published
the source code of their robot controller on a nice web page giving a
excellent overview of the program. That's a great spirit!

We are now thinking about the next edition of this contest. What should
be changed, improved, etc. Any input is of course welcome. You can stay
subscribed to this mailing list for further announcement on the upcoming
new edition of Roboka.
