This poses a problem, resulting in workarounds like keeping dummy UML1.4 projects by users that want to stick to the old stuff for some reason. Then we could also suggest users to go with an old ArgoUML version. And then we could also have made a clean UML2 branch wich no "if (UMLversion...)" code in it.

So I'd say: since we decided to support both UML 1/2 in ONE peace of software, then we should be consequent and offer both ways equitable for users.
