Dear all, The Storage System Research Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is looking for a junior developer willing to work on the internals of dataClay [1], a next generation object-based storage platform. dataClay is a distributed platform aimed at storing, sharing and processing huge amounts of data. A distinguishing feature of this platform is that, from the point of view of the applications, data is stored and managed in the form of objects, which include both the data as well as the methods that manipulate it. The main objective is to participate in the definition and implementation of the platform, within the framework of mF2C, an european H2020 research project. The context of the mF2C project is the almost unstoppable proliferation of wearable computing (smart watches), smart devices (smart meters, smart city sensors, smart cars), large-scale wireless sensor networks and Internet of Things (IoT). These smart devices lead to the development of value-added smart services using cloud and fog computing. Compared to cloud computing, fog computing presents a number of potential advantages that are complementary to those of the cloud, such as real time processing, privacy of data storage and analysis, or a collaborative and federated access to devices in near proximity. The mF2C project addresses the need for an open and coordinated management of fog and cloud computing systems, defining an open ecosystem of networked data centers, cloud and multi-cloud deployments, and distributed, real-time, and mobile computing applications, micro-clouds and cloudlets, smart end-user devices, as well as wearables and sensors/actuators. About the BSC [2]: The Barcelona Supercomputing Center is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 460 staff from 44 countries. About the Storage System Research Group [3]: Storage is the new challenge in large-scale computing systems. On the one hand, machines in 2020 are expected to break the exaflop barrier (Exascale). This new computational performance should be in pace with a similar increase in the storage capacity and performance, otherwise bottlenecks will appear and Exascale benefits will not show up. On the other hand, the exponential growth of available data is leading to what has been called the big data problem. In this area, many new challenges have appeared such as accessing the data in an efficient way, providing the appropriate programming model to easily access this data, or enabling the sharing of this data among different applications. The storage-system group at BSC is actively participating in the research of new abstractions and middlew are that will address the afore-mentioned problems. Requirements: - You must hold a Master Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related discipline Knowledge: - Object-oriented programming - Java and Python - Distributed systems - Operating systems Skills: - Strong analytical and programming skills, specifically in Java and/or Python - Capacity to understand new concepts - Capacity to generate new ideas and/or solutions - Capacity to work independently and in a team - Proficiency in spoken and written English Conditions - Start date: as soon as possible - Duration: until the end of the project (December 2019) - Location: Barcelona Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
