SCOPE

Nowadays big and rich data influence nearly every aspect of our lives and maybe 
represent one of the most relevant trends in healthcare. Evidence-based research 
has long been used to determine best practices for the care and treatment of 
patients but the amount of data available now is more than any researcher or 
provider has experienced before. 

Moreover a set of standards for most effectively gathering, manipulating, and 
analyzing data and putting it to use is still missing. The healthcare industry is 
therefore working to find ways of analyzing and mining data to uncover insights 
that might help improve outcomes.

There are different fields of medicine and rehabilitation which can take advantage 
of this significant inflow of data addressing the opportunities and challenges 
that this novel paradigm presents. Looking for patterns within data sets can suggest 
new ideas and lead to the creation of correlations among causes and subsequent 
responses and between treatment protocols and outcomes. 

As an example, the growing use of solutions based on technologies such as robotics 
and Virtual/Augmented reality for physical and cognitive rehabilitation enable to 
acquire big amounts of data from which infer new knowledge on treatments. Other 
representative applications include, virtual communities, constituted by groups of 
individuals who share the same health problems, as well as professional healthcare 
services that allow people to interact online and share their symptoms and knowledge 
about health products, medicines, and doctors, thus forming online support 
groups or self-help groups. 

The exploitation of these heterogeneous data has to be supported by the vertical 
and horizontal integration of different actors creating collaborative networks that 
include patients, technology providers, clinicians, data analysts and other experts 
necessary to implement new services and business models.

This session has the aim to address the multiple technological and organizational 
aspects influenced by the implementation of such paradigm in the health sector 
and to present most interesting contributions on related research themes and 
practical developments.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

Papers accepted for this session are included in the main conference and follow the 
same reviewing process.

Acceptance of papers is based on the full paper (up to 8 pages). Each paper will 
be evaluated by three members of the International Program Committee. However, prospective 
authors should submit a short abstract in advance, in order to check if the proposed topic 
fits within the conference scope.

When submitting on the web site, you have to indicate the name of the special session.
