First things, first! =

DESIRES needs to be done in presence to favor participation and discussion!
Hence, we aim to be the first IR conference to go back to the in-presence m=
ode! This is our bet for this year. =

Nevertheless, we are aware of the risks and the travel limitations that cou=
ld still be enforced in September 2021. For this reason DESIRES 2021 will b=
e a hybrid event. If you could/want to travel to Padua, we will welcome you=
; otherwise, we are happy to talk to you on-line!

*COVID-19 UPDATE*
The COVID-19 situation in Italy is finally improving pretty fast. By the en=
d of August, the country should reach herd immunity thanks to the ongoing m=
ass vaccination. Travel bans are going to be removed pretty soon. There wil=
l be a "green pass" to travel to Italy, and if you are or will be fully vac=
cinated by the end of August, you can probably travel to Italy and be at DE=
SIRES.

*** Registration ***
DESIRES 2021 is a hybrid event. You can come to Padua, or you can follow on=
line. Speakers are especially welcome to Padua, but we understand those who=
 prefer an online presence only.

We are trying to keep registration fees as low as possible. Please contact =
us whether you may have any issue with covering the costs.

Please note that on-site registration is not possible.

Early registration prices. =

Full fee: 350=E2=82=AC
Student fee: 250=E2=82=AC
Online-only: 70=E2=82=AC

The registration costs cover for 3 lunches, 3 coffee breaks, 2 social dinne=
rs and all the costs for the room, internet connection, proceedings and the=
 usual conference stuff. =

Vision
DESIRES is a biennial retreat-like systems-oriented conference emphasizing =
the innovative technological aspects of search and retrieval systems. DESIR=
ES gathers researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to=
discuss the latest innovative and visionary ideas in the field.
DESIRES mainly encourages papers about innovative and risky information acc=
ess and retrieval system ideas, systems-building experience and insight, re=
sourceful experimental studies, provocative position statements, and new ap=
plication domains.

DESIRES is about discussing, learning and thinking about new ideas. Hence, =
no discussion will be shut off with the "let's take this offline" keyphrase=
, if we discuss longer than expected, we just slightly reschedule the next =
talks.

DESIRES is part of the *Friends of SIGIR* program! =

There will be several travel scholarships granted to students who are going=
 to present to DESIRES.

DESIRES is *sponsored* by:
EXAMODE EU H2020 project as Gold Sponsor
Bloomberg and Google as Silver Sponsors
Department of Information Engineering, University of Padova as Bronze Spons=
or

C4P
DESIRES is a single-track conference. To encourage authors to submit only t=
heir best work, each person can be an author or co-author of only a single =
paper or prototype (plus one abstract). That is, authors can submit only 1 =
(one) paper.

The review process is single-blinded. =

There is no need to anonymize your submission, but if you prefer, you can a=
nonymize it, and we will preserve anonymity during the review process. =

DESIRES invites four kinds of contributions:

- Papers (up to 6 pages + 1 page of references). Papers usually lack rigoro=
us frameworks, simulations of performance, or prototype implementations but=
present a radical departure from conventional approaches that enables new =
applications. Accepted full papers will typically be presented in 20 minute=
s with (at least) 10 minutes for questions and discussion. There will be a =
discussant for each paper that will read the paper in advance and prepare q=
uestions (plus questions from the audience).

- Prototypes (up to 4 pages + 1 page of references). The prototype descript=
ions generally are a detailed report on successes and mistakes. Accepted pr=
ototype papers will typically be presented in 10 minutes with 5 minutes for=
 questions and discussion.

- Abstracts (1 page + 1 page of references). Ideas that are too half-baked =
for a paper or demo proposal are good candidates for an abstract. Any autho=
r of a paper or prototype demo may additionally submit one abstract. Abstra=
cts are expected to have a single author. Accepted abstracts are presented =
in a gong-show style.

- *new* Open Problems in IR (up to 2 pages + 1 page of references). This is=
a new track. We are looking for abstract-like papers framing an important =
but unsolved problem in IR. "Open-Problems" papers are expected to have a s=
ingle author. Any author of a paper, prototype demo, or abstract may additi=
onally submit one "Open-Problems" paper.

Format: Submissions of papers must be in English, in PDF format, and in the=
current ACM two-column conference format. Suitable LaTeX, Word, and Overle=
af (https://www.overleaf.com/gallery/tagged/acm-official#.WOuOk2e1taQ) temp=
lates are available from the ACM Website (use the \=E2=80=9Csigconf\=E2=80=
=9D proceedings template).

Publication: The accepted (and presented) papers will be published as CEUR-=
WS proceedings freely available on-line: http://ceur-ws.org/ (Indexed by DB=
LP and Scopus). Modified or incremental versions of the papers included in =
the DESIRES proceedings can be submitted to other venues. The scope of DESI=
RES is discussing ideas, not tying them.

Dates
Conference: 15-18 September 2021
(Wednesday evening welcome reception, Thursday and Friday full days + Satur=
day morning [depending on participation])
Early registration: from June, 20 to August, 30 2021.
Submission deadline: June 25, 2021 (AoE) (extended)
Notifications: July 20, 2021 (extended)

***Venue and Organization***
DESIRES 2021 will be held at the Department of Information Engineering of t=
he University of Padua, Padua, Italy
Address: Via Gradenigo, 6, 35131, Padova, Italy
We will provide discounted prices and suggestions for hotels nearby.

***Clash with IIR***
DESIRES 2021 starts on Wednesday, September 15 evening with a welcome recep=
tion (hopefully in presence) to avoid clashing with the Italian Information=
Retrieval Workshop held in Bari, Italy, which ends on September 15. People=
can participate to both events without any real overlap.
